CBD 101: Benefits, Effects & Safety

Roula Matar

By now, we’ve all heard about CBD. CBD products have seemed to pop-up everywhere in a variety of products such as food, drinks, oils, bath bombs, capsules, lotions, pet products, and even makeup. But what exactly is CBD, and how is it different from THC? More importantly, what are the benefits of CBD and how can it be useful in treating certain ailments?

What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (also known as CBD) is one of over 400 chemicals found in the cannabis plant. It is found in both marijuana and hemp. Out of all these 400 chemicals, we currently know the most about THC and CBD, meaning its benefits have been highly researched among scientists. The biggest difference between CBD and THC is that CBD does not contain any psychoactive properties, meaning it will not make you “high” like THC does. This means that consumers can reap the benefits of the cannabis plant without feeling high. According to the World Health Organization, "In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD."

What is CBD known to treat?
CBD is widely known to provide relief for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is also known to promote sleep, as an aid for insomnia. It also is known to treat a variety of other ailments such as

  • seizures
  • inflammation
  • pain
  • psychosis or mental disorders
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • nausea
  • migraine

What does CBD feel like?
Unlike THC, CBD does not cause a high or state of euphoria. CBD may help make you feel relaxed, less anxious, or less in pain, but you certainly will not feel high.

As CBD users take CBD for different reasons, this makes everyone’s experience unique based on why they are taking CBD. As a simple explanation, you can think of CBD as being similar to what you experience when you take something like Tylenol.

When CBD takes its effect, you experience the absence of symptoms and a return back to a more normal state. For example, if you take CBD for pain, you will feel less pain. If you take CBD for anxiety, you will feel less anxious.

Does CBD have side effects?
Cannabidiol (and cannabis, including THC and all other cannabinoids) has a fantastic safety record as a food supplement, even in high doses. Unlike many pharmaceutical medications there’s no chance of serious harm if you take a little more than you mean to.

In rare cases, some people may experience some negative side effects when they take CBD, especially at high concentrations. These side effects can include:

  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • dry mouth

If you are currently taking prescription medications, talk to your doctor or medical professional before starting CBD. Some medicines may be less beneficial because of CBD, or could even interact and cause some unintended side effects.
